This painting came about during a rather hilarious conversation. The literal representation of a layer cake was so clear, I sketched it out almost immediately and started painting it the next day. Infertility has a habit of breeding resentment. That resentment is layered, like a cake. And the cherry on top is (of course) the patriarchy. I also really enjoy how the happy cake is such a visual representation of how we hide. The perfect cake on the outside, all nice and smiling. What’s inside is so much more.
